The must have accessories for every room, do you know what they are? Accessories make the room; they add pizazz to any space when they are done correctly. Done incorrectly and they look like clutter. There are a few simple tips to insure success when accessorizing.
First tip, before you start to accessorize take a picture of the room as it is right now. Look carefully at the picture, make a list of what you like and don't like about everything in the room. Is there too much clutter, too much furniture, too many things lying around, or maybe too many pictures?
Is the room being represented with the colors you want or has it become a mismatch of colors that don't relate to each other? Now is the time to establish the colors you want for the room. What is your main color, secondary and lastly your accent color?
Take out everything in the room. Leave only the large pieces of furniture. Start with a clean slate now is a good time to remove unwanted furniture. Look at your picture and ask yourself does the furniture in this room work? Is it positioned correctly in the room? Is the flow of traffic good or are pieces of furniture blocking the way?
It is time to start bringing back only the things that number one fit your color scheme, number two do not create too much clutter, and number three only the things you love. Evaluate everything that you bring back into the room.
Several things are a must have when looking at accessories, the first being pictures on the wall. Word of caution do not clutter your walls, less is more. One of my pet peeves is artwork hung too high! Keep it at eye level; the middle of the artwork should be at your eye level. If you are having trouble sorting out which pieces to bring back get a second opinion from a friend.
Second must have is lighting, it is hard to have too much light, but you can have too many light fixtures. Plan strategy where to place lighting, where do you set and read? Put lights around the room to light it evenly. If you have many different kinds of bases in different colors that do not work together, consider painting them. You can paint any kind of lamp base with the correct type of paint; ask a professional what you need. Don't forget the lampshades they can also be painted.
Third, fourth, and fifth must have accessories are up to your individual taste but I think they go something like this. Third, are large area rugs, they bring together the room. Fourth, pillows again less is more always do these in odd numbers, three throw pillows that match the décor will be a nice addition of color. Fifth, the special things you love family pictures, vases and candles, or collections. When working with these make sure you put like things together and also keep them in groupings of odd numbers.
Have fun and make sure you take a picture of the room when you are done, it might be perfect or the camera might show you things that need a few changes. Take one final picture when the room is completely done.
