The Look for Less: Calming Master Suite

I recently fell in love with this beautiful master bedroom featured in House Beautiful. I wouldn't say it's 100% my style but I am really drawn to how calming it feels. A lot of my clients love to go crazy with color and pattern throughout their house but when it comes to their bedroom they want an escape from the chaos.

I've recreated the same feel for less today with this mood board!

 6. Table Lamp $89
 7. Tufted Sleigh Bed $955.99
 10. Agate Bookends $14
 11. Mahogany Nightstand $220.99
12. Mums Bedding $38-$168

Which would you prefer? A calming bedroom or a crazy colorful one?

Decorating a Rental

One of my best friends and clients Trisha has been living in a rental for over a year now. While the house is nice and neutral it doesn't showcase Trisha's amazing style and taste. So she asked for my help to spruce up her Living Room.

This is an idea of what we started with. Trisha already had all the main pieces for the room but we wanted to add some pillows and recover her ottoman. Because she's renting we couldn't hang anything on the walls including art or window treatments. When she leaves this house she will have to pay for every single hole she puts in the wall. I convinced her that with pillows and accessories we could add a lot to the space!

I put together a fabric scheme for her jumping off from the amazing ottoman we recovered. The blue trellis pillow was made from Kravet Riad in Indigo. All the pillows were sew by Erin from Plush Studio.

The ottoman fabric is G.P. & J. Baker Hydrangea Bird in Natural and was reupholstered by Rocky Mountain Upholstery.

We wanted the room to have a color scheme of pink, blue and seafoam.  The pink pillow was made from Fabricut Definitely Maybe in Raspberry. The blue dot pillow is from Land's End but is no longer available.

We didn't have a lot of space for accessories so we kept them minimal. Trisha bought this amazing rock in St. George Utah on a recent trip we took together.

The media cabinet is from Home Decorators. It's no longer available in white but you can get it for a great deal in espresso.

The rug is from Dash & Albert.

These amazing blue chairs are from Caitlin Creer. The ikat fabric is from Robert Allen.

The lamp is the Arteriors Home Cooper Gold Iron Floor Lamp. It is amazing!

For me the key with rentals is to not focus on what you can't do and focus on what you can do instead. We can't do overhead lighting so we brought in an amazing floor lamp. We can't do anything about window treatments and art so we added fun prints and colors with the ottoman fabric and pillows. We can't repaint the walls so we added color with pillows, furniture and the rug.

I also told Trisha to remember that this rental is not her "forever house". We wanted to buy things that she could easily transfer to her new home. That amazing lamp will look good anywhere forever so it was a great investment. Don't buy crappy stuff just because you aren't living in a permanent home. Think about buying things that you will love and have for a long time after your time in this rental is over.

E-Design Nursery Before and After

Back in November I did a post about an e-design project I was working on. The project was one of my favorites I've ever done! What can I say, I just really enjoy children's spaces!

My client wanted a space that had a well traveled feel to it.

She wanted this print to be her inspiration for the room. She had lived in the middle east for awhile so the print really represented her.

Here is a snapshot of the room before...

And here it is after!

paint color: Fresh Day by Behr

Rhino Head: Z Gallerie

It was really fun sourcing artwork for her  little gallery wall. We both loved this Massachusetts map print, this Always be Kind print, this canal print of Amsterdam  and this Paris Eiffel Tower print.

We used Schumacher's Adras Ikat to tie in all the colors. It's the same fabric I used here for Jett's headboard.

We went back and forth on a few options for maps above the crib but ultimately decided on this one made by an artist in France.

To see past projects I have done go here.

While I am not currently taking new clients I do have great designers I can recommend. Email me at kirstenkrason@gmail.com for info.

Small Updates Go A Long Way

A few months ago my cousin Angela contacted me about giving her some quick and easy tips on sprucing up her Living Room. Her husband is in Dental School so her budget for changes was pretty m much nothing. Here is how her Living Room was looking originally:

The only word I can think of to describe this is brown... Since her budget is almost nothing she had to keep the furniture. So she changed out the pillows and made a chevron rug by painting a $60 ikea rug.

This helped brighten up the space but it was still missing a few things.

Her main concerns were that the room felt too dark overall. In general she just wanted it lighter and brighter feeling. Here is what I suggested she should do:

* Paint the room a lighter cream color
* Add more mirrors, one over the fireplace and one where her bridal picture hung in the corner of the room.
* Paint the end table and coffee table a lighter color
* Get rid of the curtains all together
* Add some floral to the fireplace, layer on some art and add color!
* Add blues and greens where possible to balance out the warmth in the room.

Angela got right to work making some small changes that made a big difference in the space!

She bought some cute paper from Paper Source and covered her coffee table books to add some additional pattern to the space. Angela also has a pillow shop on Etsy, Sew Hip and Humble, so she was able to sew the pillows herself.

She followed my advice and painted the walls a lighter color which I think helped tremendously to brighten up the space.

She got rid of the tuscan style art and candlesticks she had above her mantle and added some lighter decor. The mirror also really helps to brighten up the space.

She created the subway art to put above her shelf using a decal from this etsy shop. The art displays places that have special meaning to them and the light blue color helps cool the space down and add a lot of color!

The curtains she had before were nice but they made the room feel a little cramped. She replaced them with bamboo blinds which add a lot of texture to the space.

She followed a similar tutorial to this to make a mirror for the corner of the room. I also suggested framing a print from a calendar to add some cheap art. She bought this one.

She bought these little birds a the dollar store and painted them!

By keeping all the existing furniture and just making a few changes to accessories and art she was able to totally transform her space!

An E-Design Nursery Board

I recently had the opportunity to work with an e-design client on a nursery for her baby-to-be. I think nurseries and kid's rooms are my very favorite spaces to design. They are so much fun!

This cute client wasn't finding out the gender of her baby so it was somewhat challenging to design a room that was gender neutral without being too... well... neutral! I think we often play it safe with gender-neutral spaces because we don't want to go too one way or the other. She wanted a room that had a "well traveled" feel to it with trinkets from around the world.

She wanted to use this print as the inspiration for the room. I took the color scheme and ran with it. I created a plan that would work for either a boy or girl.

I ended up doing two boards that were almost identical but I switched up the pillows depending on the gender.

Here is the "girl" board.

And here is the "boy"board.

My client had the idea to keep the crib bedding and the twin bedding somewhat similar so they seemed to fit in the room together and I thought it was a great idea.

I love how this gender-neutral nursery isn't neutral at all! It's fun, vibrant and has the well-traveled feel she asked for. I also love that it's a space her baby can grow into. It's not too young feeling or too old.

I can't wait to find out what she's having and see pictures of the finished room!

Welcome Back Sugar Fresh & Discount Code!

I'm so excited to welcome back Sugar Fresh as an advertiser on my blog! Sugar Fresh is one of my go to places for unique and modern children's art.

Sugar Fresh has also recently added two new beautiful prints to the shop.

I think this print is so sweet. I designed a little mood board around it for you! The print is very pretty and soft so I added some black to create some graphic punch in this room. I love the polka dot rug and the polka dot pouf.

Today Sugar Fresh is offering a discount code for my readers.
